Is Maureen McDonnell’s Excessive Spending Justified?


Does not having the wardrobe or resources necessary for her role as Virginia’s first lady justify Maureen McDonnell’s $9,800 shopping spree with her husbands PAC money?

The Washington Post explains that the use of political funds for personal items may be more common than we thought.

The article reports, “State election officials said it is not unusual for candidates to call asking if they can charge their campaigns for the clothing they wear in the course of running for office. They are told that it is not illegal.”

Are Virginia’s PAC laws too lax? Was excessive spending by Virginia’s first lady technically not out of line?
