Thursday Night Forum Results in More Attacks

Thursday night, at the University of Richmond, both gubernatorial nominees had the chance to speak at a forum and found even more ways to attack each other.

Ken Cuccinelli (R) brought up Terry McAuliffe’s (D) recent scandal about being involved with a Rhode Island estate planner who was deceiving terminally ill people. After that scandal broke, the Associated Press quickly pulled the story, citing false information.

In an article posted by The Washington Post, Cuccinelli was quoted as saying, “Yesterday in Rhode Island, a Democrat prosecutor’s indictment demonstrated for the first time that Terry McAuliffe was investing in insurance instruments that banked on terminally ill people dying,” Cuccinelli said. “You can’t make this stuff up.”

He delivered a low blow when he added, “My opponent invested in people dying.”

McAuliffe was cleared from this scandal because there was no evidence that he, or any of the other investors, were actually in on the crime or had any idea what was happening.

In response, McAuliffe accused Cuccinelli of disguising his real stance on abortion. He made the argument that Cuccinelli was too socially conservative to run the state of Virginia.

McAuliffe fired back by saying, “Tonight Ken Cuccinelli deliberately misled the Virginia voters,” McAuliffe said. “He said tonight that he supports public financing for abortions in the case of rape. We know that this man has spent his entire career opposing abortions even in the case of rape and incest. And tonight he sat in this chair and went against everything he has fought for his entire career.”

With less than a month to go before Election Day, it’s going to be interesting to see what else they start attacking each other on and just how dramatic this gets.
