FCC Contemplates Banning Redskins Name

After months of ongoing debate surrounding Washington NFL team, the Redskins which many consider a derogatory term to to Native Americans, the FCC has begun to contemplate whether or not they will punish broadcasters for using the name, reports The Daily Press.

Legal activist John Banzhaf III has submitted a petition to the Federal Communications Commission, which enforces indecency¬†violations, asking that the regulators take away WWXX-FM’s broadcasting licensee for using the term. Banzhaf claims that the term is hateful and racist, thus making its use “akin to broadcasting obscenity.”

FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler responded to news of the request by saying “We’ll be looking at that petition, we will be dealing with that issue on the merits and we’ll be responding accordingly,” adding “there are a lot of names and descriptions that were used over time that are inappropriate today. And I think the name attributed to the Washington football club is one of those.”

If the FCC deems the name indecent, it would impose a de facto ban on its use on over-the-air television and radio.
